Society President, Hagood Morrison, provided these remarks as he presented the award:
“Cheves Leland came to the Society in 2000 and has served as our Researcher and Historian for 24 years. She is truly the heart of the Society and has made it her life’s work to perpetuate the memory and to foster and promote the principles and virtues of the Huguenots. She is a gifted writer and has authored several books with her cousin Susan Bates, most recently, French Santee: A Huguenot Settlement in Colonial South Carolina. Her knowledge of our Huguenot families is encyclopedic. She has contributed to editing Transactions, cataloging the society’s library, proving lineages, writing articles and most recently, providing education programs to students as part of the new Education Hour program. She gives generously of her time and is always quick to volunteer when a special need arises.”
The presentation was met with a standing ovation from the audience.
All may enjoy hearing Cheves share her wealth of knowledge on the Society’s podcast, Les Réfugiés. And, her books are available in the Society store, online and at headquarters.
