Carolina Day 2023

On 28 June 2023, the Huguenot Society of South Carolina celebrated Carolina Day. Alongside other lineage and preservation organizations, dignitaries and fellow citizens the society made the march from Washington Square Park to White Point Garden at The Battery. Society President Hagood Morrison lead the Huguenot procession accompanied by members of the Society’s board, staff and membership.

Historian and professor at The Citadel, Dr. David Preston, delivered an address about the valued role of foreign supporters such as Lafayette to the victory at The Battle of Fort Sullivan. Following this, there was a lovely reception by the Daughters of the American Revolution at the Old Exchange Building.

The Society was pleased to participate in remembering all the brave patriots of Carolina Day and our Huguenot ancestors who successfully defended Charleston. In reflection of the celebrations, the Society’s Executive Director, Ms. Elizabeth Gay, stated,

“Ever since I was a child, I have celebrated Carolina Day to honor our ancestors and their fellow patriots. The best part of this tradition is our fellowship with so many descendants – to think all our relatives were shoulder to shoulder that day and here we are generations later honoring them as friends. It warms the heart and reminds me of the importance of preserving their memory. And how fortunate I am to have these centuries of connections with so many.”

We are grateful to everyone who celebrated with us.
